What is a safe system design?

A safe system design means that the safety of a road can be improved before crashes happen. By considering the design elements of a road in relation to its use and functionality, an assessment can be made of the safety of the road. Speed is a critical issue here because it higher speeds increase the probability of crashes and the severity of the outcome of a crash. The tool therefore calculates a safe speed. A safe speed is a speed at which most crashes with a car will not be fatal for the people involved in the crash. Safe speeds are calculated from current knowledge gained from crash tests, and may differ from what countries have in their design manuals.
