What are self-explaining roads?

Self-explaining roads are roads that meet the expectations of road users and evoke driving behaviour that is consistent with the legal rules and safety on the road. Speed is an important issue in self-explaining roads. By designing the road so that it is consistent with the posted speed limit, the speed limit will be more credible and intuitive for road users. This will increase speed limit compliance and acceptance. This tool highlights when the posted speed limit of a road can be regarded as credible, or why it might be regarded as too high or too low to be credible for the majority of road users. In summary, self-explaining roads and credible speed limits can enhance the safety on the road. However, a self-explaining road with credible speed limits does not necessarily meet safety standards. This tool therefore addresses the issue of safety explicitly as well.
